How To Play

How to Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a head-to-head strategy card game where each duelist uses monsters, spells and traps to control the field and reduce the opponent's Life Points from 8000 to 0.

Starting Life Points

8000 per player

Main Deck

40 to 60 cards

Extra Deck

Up to 15 cards

Side Deck

Up to 15 cards

Objective

Win by reducing your opponent to 0 Life Points, forcing them to draw from an empty Deck, or resolving a card effect that says you win the Duel.

Setup

Each player starts with a Deck, usually up to 15 cards in the Extra Deck and up to 15 in the Side Deck. Shuffle your Deck, draw 5 cards, and begin with 8000 Life Points. Decide who takes the first turn.

Turn Structure

A turn usually flows through Draw, Standby, Main Phase 1, Battle Phase, Main Phase 2 and End Phase. In your Main Phases you can summon monsters, set cards and activate many effects. In the Battle Phase you attack with monsters in Attack Position.

Summons And Combat

You normally get 1 Normal Summon or Set each turn, while Special Summons depend on card effects or special mechanics such as Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Link. If your monster's ATK is higher than the opponent's, you destroy their monster and may deal battle damage.

Beginner Tips

Learn the difference between Monster, Spell and Trap cards first, then practice reading timing and card text carefully. Start with a simple deck, keep track of once-per-turn effects, and only commit key cards when you can protect them.
